I began playing around with the Unreal Engine 3 this past weekend, and absolutely love it so far. All the possibilities it opens up has my head spinning a little, however. I had the thought that I would like to remake an area from a fist-gen shooter using the latest techniques, as a way to teach myself more about game level design, and the next gen process in general. Im about to be laid off, so I figure Ill have tons of time for the next couple weeks to really bust out something awesome.
My question to the game playing community... Which scene from what game do you think would be worth remaking? Since Im a UE3 noob, I dont want to get too involved, so I was thinking one large room, or maybe just a big hallway. Id like to find something from Unreal 1, Half Life 1 or similar. So if you know of an awesome environment from an old game - shout it out!

Anyway, I know how to use vertex colors in 3d max, but I never got into that with Maya. Most of the Maya work I did was huge high poly nonsense (what a suprise)

p.s. new one i got was only $69 and almost as powerful as the one I had before that cost me $200 just last year.
